Cox Plate winner Winx has been elevated to the pride and joy of Chris Waller’s stable and the trainer admits to taking extra care of her as he prepares to run her 1st up in the Apollo Stakes this coming Saturday.
Waller opted to take Winx to Randwick Saturday to have a gallop in between the races rather than trial her again.
“With a horse like Winx you are always trying just that extra bit harder,” Waller said.
“She will be an important part of the carnival.
“People want to see her and want to see her win.
“It’s a different situation but I’m getting an idea of what Peter Moody went through with Black Caviar.
“We don’t want to leave any stone unturned.”
Waller said Winx had come back 10 to 15kg heavier than she was in the spring and he was pleased with her two recent barrier trials.
“She is not a sensational trialler and she has been having a blow after her gallops which is why I wanted her to have a good hit-out at Randwick,” he said.
“Maybe I’m over analysing things.
“She is an extreme athlete and unlike some other horses she can race 95 per cent fit and still win.
“Racing her in the Apollo opens up the option of getting her to the Group One Chipping Norton Stakes two weeks later.
“I want to get the first race right.
“It’s a long carnival and she is a valuable horse.”
Bowman was pleased at the progress Winx has made over the last few weeks aswell and feels she is ready to go.
Winx recorded her last 600m of the gallop in 35.44 seconds, but basically just cruised up the straight before really letting down in the final 200m.
“I’m a lot more confident now that she is ready to go to the races next week than I was following her trial,” Bowman said.
“She has really come on since the trial and felt very good underneath me today.”
If Waller ends up skipping the Apollo on Saturday, the Millie Fox looms as the most obvious race to start her prep in the following week at Rosehill.
Whatever he does choose as a punter and fan of racing I cannot wait to see her back out there. Before the Cox I said she had to prove herself and well she sure did that didn’t she. Let’s hope she continues on winning and has a great career.
