After winning the Australian Guineas Trainer Darren Weir has indicated that there is a good chance Palentino will back up against the older horses this week in The Australian Cup, this has moved his price into $8 and on the fourth line of betting with Ladbrokes.
Palentino who forced Tarzino out of the way and outstayed him to the line showed a lot of guts and determination to beat last years VRC Derby Winner. The fact the he has come out of that race so well was the decideding to factor to head towards the Australian Cup.
If Palentino can continue to impress stable foreman Jarod Mclean in the lead up this week he will take his place in the Australian Cup.
“A lot of them don’t eat up when they get home but there was no feed left in his feed bin on Sunday morning, Jarrod said,” Weir said.
“Palentino went for a wade at the beach and trot and canter and Jarrod said he felt really good.
“We’ll just monitor him over the next couple of days and hopefully he does well enough so we can back him up on Saturday.”
History will be against him with Super Cool the last three year old to win this race, however he didn’t come through the Australian Guineas and back up. Before Super Cool you have to go back to the mighty Saintly to find another three year old winner.
Bow Creek still remains favourite though after his last start barnstorming win and from my humble opinion he has a lot of upside going forward.
